Demetrios Psillos

Demetrios Psillos - His witty, provocative and irreverent outlook on life compliment a truly original and eclectic style. Colour fuelled brush-strokes, print, pattern and detail are drawn together across paper and canvas with a graphic confidence.

Of Greek-Cypriot origin Psillos grew up and studied in London. Having received a BA Hons degree in Fashion he was immediately recruited by Internationally renowned designer John Galliano as pattern-cutter attached to the London Atelier.

It was from here that his love of drawing and painting inspired a change of direction and destination with a move to New York city 2 years later. There he established a studio and an impressive folio of publications he regularly contributed to: Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, The New Yorker, Wallpaper, Travel & Leisure, George and The New York Times. In addition seasonal Ad Campaigns followed for Barney's New York, Bergdorf Goodman and Macy's.

After an industrious four years in the Big Apple he returned to London as a weekly contributor to The Times Magazine and to British Vogue. His successful collaborations with Nigella Lawson's Food and LIfestytle columns developed further and resulted in his debut within the world of animation. In association with Channel 4 Psillos created the animated opening title sequence for, 'Nigella Bites' the multi-award winning cookery programme. Series two, 'Forever Summer' followed shortly after - again with an original Psillos animation opener.

Product design and packaging soon beckoned. The Ritzenhoff Group and Psillos creating a collection of vases, champagne glasses, tumblers, tea-lights, ashtrays, bath linens and watches. All with unique artwork and in a limited edition run.

2005 marked another first for Psillos with a personal invitation from Composer Gian Carlo Menotti to exhibit at The Spoleto Festival (Festival dei Due Mondi). The internationally celebrated Music and Arts festival held annually since 1957. It was at this prodigious event in 2005 that Demetrios Psillos was given the Pegasus Award in recognition for his outstanding contribution to the festival. His exhibition entitled 'Soggetti e Oggetti' (Subjects and Objects) displayed over 150 paintings and drawings and included a room installation of hand decorated paper sculptures entitled 'The Feast'. June 2006 marked his return with a second invitation to exhibit with a collection of paintings and resin sculptures entitled, 'Creatures and Characters'.

More recently alongside his regular commissions he has begun a weekly assignment for The Guardian Weekend and has made time to tutor a life-drawing class at Norwich School of Art & Design. And if Psillos wasn't busy enough a children's book is currently in the works. Watch this space.
